Pictures from the press conference at Yankee Stadium today, where legendary Yankee catcher Jorge Posada formally announced his retirement from baseball.
30 days until Spring Training!
I hate to speak for everyone (but I will) when I say we all believed GM Brian Cashman and the rest of the Yanks brass when they said there would be no major changes to the club for 2012.
Well, there were.
The mega-prospect swap of Jesus Montero for Michael Pineda is a dice roll of sorts, if only for the fact Montero appears destined for stardom and pitchers inherently carry a certain risk factor with them. But let’s be clear: if you have a chance to trade a high-ceiling hitter for a potential top 3 pitcher in the game (Pineda certainly has that type of ceiling), you should probably do it. And, with the free agent signing of ex-Dodger Hiroki Kiroda, it says here the Yanks could be the best team in baseball.

The Yankees are set to acquire right-hander Michael Pineda from the Mariners in a four-player deal, but they aren’t done improving their rotation. Jack Curry of YES Network reports that they have agreed to terms with Hiroki Kuroda on a one-year deal worth between $10-11 million, pending a physical. ESPN’s Buster Olney reports that it’s for $10 million.
Kuroda, who turns 37 in February, earned $12 million last season while posting a 3.07 ERA and 161/49 K/BB ratio over 202 innings. He has a 3.45 ERA since coming over to the United States four years ago.

One of my favorite things about Derek getting his 3,000th hit was his teammates reaction to it. And there was no better reaction then Jorge’s. The mutual love and respect these players have for one another is really special. They are teammates, best friends, brothers. This was my favorite moment of the DJ3K HBO special, no one was getting in Jorge’s way to be the first one to greet Derek at home plate. In honor of Jorge’s impending retirement, thank you Jorge.
Signature play in the hole.
